The weapons and gear of Gray Matter Splatter

Today I wanted to take a couple minutes to run you through some of the weapons, gear, vehicles, and technology featured in my new novel called Gray Matter Splatter.

Seizure grenade

The seizure grenade is real, something being developed as one component of a much larger secret program.  Sadly, you can’t see a demonstration outside of some fictional video games.

Visual disruption laser

U.S. Navy Chief Fire Controlman Kevin Barnett, assigned to the guided missile destroyer USS Forrest Sherman (DDG 98), uses an LA9P nonlethal visual disruption laser to deter a simulated small boat attack during exercise Joint Warrior 2012 April 17, 2012, in the Atlantic Ocean. Joint Warrior is a United Kingdom-led multi-warfare exercise designed to improve interoperability between allied navies and prepare participating crews to conduct combined operations while deployed. They are called visual disruption lasers because lasers that blind people are illegal under the Geneva convention, as they maim.  Interestingly, lasers that kill are a-okay though!

Carrickfergus

The fictional Carrickfergus which our heroes use as a modern day pirate ship, authorized by letters of marque, is largely based on a real life US military experimental ship.

Arctic submarine

One scene in the book was inspired by arctic submarine operations.  You can take a peek at one of our subs breaching through the arctic ice in this youtube video:

Semi-submersible ship

Semi-submersible

The bad guys in Gray Matter Splatter make their getaway in a semi-submersible ship.  These are hardly anything new as everyone from the US Navy to drug traffickers utilize semi-submersible craft, however the fictional ship in my book is quite a bit bigger than anything you’ll likely find in real life.

SEAL torpedo

Yes, the SEALpedo is a thing, and you can read up on its development in this story from Fox News.

Crossmatch

Screen Shot 2016-08-17 at 11.12.58 AM

As our heroes race across the arctic to try to identify who the villians are, a bio-metrics gathering device manufactured by Crossmatch is particularly helpful.  You can read more about the device here.

PenCott “Snowdrift” camo

In Gray Matter Splatter, the mercenaries of Samruk International make extensive use of PenCott’s Snowdraft camo scheme, which also appears on the book cover.

Petzl ice axe

One mean looking ice axe.  Of course, the mercs in Gray Matter Splatter get a ice axe kill in the book.  You can check out the real thing on the Petzl website.

Assault snow shoes

I did not even know there was a such thing until I started the research phase of Gray Matter Splatter.  Suffice to say I learned a lot while writing this book.

Iveco Assault truck

Last but not least, the Samruk International assault truck makes an appearance in Gray Matter Splatter, although the arctic is hardly the appropriate environment for these vehicles.

Shooting the HK 417 at SHOT 2013

So far we are weapons hot here in Las Vegas for the SHOT show.  I hosted Inside the Team Room, filmed in The Foundation Room at the top of the Mandalay Hotel yesterday.  The guests were former 3rd Ranger Battalion soldiers Isaiah Burkhart, Clyde Carmody, and Nick Irving.  I think we got some great stuff on tape, the bulk of the show will consist of funny and ridiculous stories from Ranger Battalion with an equal amount of time spent on combat deployments.  Inside the Team Room will now go in to Post-Production and I will keep you up to date for when the first episode goes live.

Jack, Burkhart, Carmody, and Nick

Jack, Burkhart, Carmody, and Nick

Finally getting some sleep, Burkhart, Nick, and myself headed out to the Media Range Day with Brandon Webb this morning.  We got to fire some guns but it was way colder than anyone expected.  Not at all a fun day to shoot!  We did check out the new Gen. 4 10mm Glocks which were pretty sweet.  I also finally got some trigger time on the HK 417.  In my novel, Target Deck, I have the team sniper carry the 417 as his primary weapon.  I didn’t have any experience behind this rifle myself but when some experts in the field that I know tell me that this is their favorite semi-automatic sniper rifle I am willing to take their word for it.

Shooting the HK 417, as you can see it was a little windy

Shooting the HK 417, as you can see it was a little windy

The rifle itself fired much like the SR-25 but with the gas-piston upper receiver the recoil goes straight to the rear of the rifle as opposed to pushing the rifle to the rear and upwards with a traditional gas gun.  Long distance marksmanship (and marksmanship in general) is a perishable skill and unfortunately I don’t get much trigger time these days as I live in New York City and don’t get away from my college studies as much as I might want too.  Yeah, I had no trouble knocking out the center of a steel target, but that is with a 7.62 rifle, with a ten power scope, from about 75 meters away.  Not exactly an impressive sniper shot.  However, I came away from my experience with the 417 thinking one thing: I WANT ONE.

Gearing up for the SHOT Show in Las Vegas

DSC03185

The SHOT show last year was a blast even though it was a whirlwind for me.  I was out in the desert for the range day and then did one day of the show before flying out that night as I had to begin the next semester of college.  This year will be a little more relaxed.  I’m flying out early to meet up with some old Ranger buddies to film the next episode of Inside the Team Room for SOFREP TV.  I think the show is going to come out great and it will be awesome to catch up with some old friends.  After that, it is off to the media day at the range and then the SHOT show itself.  I’ll be scoping out some new gear and post some updates and pictures here at Reflexivefire.com!  It will also be cool to hang out with fellow military fiction writers such as Peter Nealen and Jack Silkstone.  You never know who you will run into at SHOT.  Last year I crossed paths with Matt Bissonnette, the now infamous SEAL Team Six operator who published “No Easy Day” under his pen name, Mark Owen.

Hope to see you in Vegas!
