Issue Two is running a little long so I’m wondering if people would rather see a the novella length issue split in two. On one hand you get the material faster, and the second issue a month or so later, on the other you pay twice to get all the content when the novella is split up like that. What do you think?
I voted “Who Cares” because it’s a matter of what you’re trying to do. If you want each story arc to be a single issue then make each issue as long as it needs to be to tell the story. If your goal is to put out an issue of a certain length every time, then split it once you break a certain threshold.
In the end, it depends on your publishing paradigm – do you want to focus on getting (for example) a 20K word installment out the door every month, or do you want to focus on telling a self-contained story every issue, regardless of time and length?
Answer that question for yourself, and you’ll have your answer.
The original goal was to tell a self contained story in every issue that was part of a wider story arc that would take place over the series. I never intended to write X amount of words and throw it up on Kindle each month. Good point.
Yeah, there you go. Stick with your paradigm and I think you’ll be solid. You’re not publishing a magazine that needs to be out the door every 30 days – you’re writing stories and when they are ready they are ready, and the length is the length. If you stick with that, you’ll be rock solid.
That was a clumsily-written paragraph. Can you tell I’m doing this at work?
Anyhow, you get what I mean.
Thanks Jack. I’m excited about getting this one out the door. Issue One was a narrative hook but Issue Two will have the action along with the character development.
